The Dominican Republic Project was initiated by the MIT Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in the 2003-2004 academic year. A team comprised of environmental engineering graduate and undergraduates and a MIT Sloan Business School student traveled to the Dominican Republic in January 2004 to evaluate the performance and implementation program of the biosand filter. This team was hosted by Dr. Jan Tollefson of the Canadian non-governmental organization, “Add Your Light.”
